Melissa Mason DNP, RN, APRN, FNP-C
Doctor of Nursing Practice, Nurse Practitioner
Melissa Mason, a family nurse practitioner, has long been a wellness enthusiast. She was drawn to nursing, in part, due to the holistic nature of the nursing model of care. She recognizes individuals as multifaceted and complex, taking into account the mind, body, and spirit when addressing patients' health and well-being. “My main objective is to partner with patients, providing them with the tools necessary to make empowered decisions and take control of their health. I also want to impart a sense of genuine caring and compassion to bring patients comfort and provide the best possible healthcare experience.” Melissa is known for going above and beyond for her patients. She strives to provide exceptional care that aligns with your personal needs and beliefs.
Melissa began her functional medicine journey in 2011, after witnessing so many patients being failed by the conventional medical system, herself included. She was inspired by her friend and mentor of more than 10 years, Lucy Douglas, who provided her with education and resources relating to functional medicine. Thereafter, she began conducting her own research and used this knowledge to help several patients, friends, and colleagues achieve their wellness goals through individualized diet, exercise, stress management, and nutraceutical plans.
As a family nurse practitioner, Melissa is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of men and women across the lifespan. “I like to think I specialize in ‘hot messes,’” Melissa jokes, “people who have been told they are ‘fine’ but still don’t feel well. People who want to get healthy but don’t know where to start. Forming relationships with patients and helping them be their best selves through all seasons of life is my great joy. I don’t want to just treat symptoms when problems arise. And, although lifestyle modifications are considered first-line therapy for many diseases in conventional medicine, these crucial elements are often not addressed or are glossed over. We are failing our patients when we do not identify and treat the root causes of their illnesses--that's where functional medicine comes in. I am here to listen and hear you, respect you, and partner with you. Together, we will develop a plan to help you live a satisfying and vibrant life.”
Melissa grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana and obtained her undergraduate nursing degree from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. Shortly after graduating, she moved to Austin, Texas with her husband, Walt, and began her nursing career as a medical-surgical/telemetry registered nurse at the University Medical Center at Brackenridge. She later worked in outpatient endoscopy, home health, and endocrinology. Feeling that advanced education would help her better serve her patients, she went back to school to become a nurse practitioner and obtained both her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Kentucky, graduating summa cum laude. She originally worked in cardiac electrophysiology as a nurse practitioner for Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia before receiving additional post-graduate training and practicing as a functional medicine nurse practitioner at Oubre Medical in Austin, Texas.
Melissa continues to live and work in Austin with Walt and their two pugs, Sookie and Mo. They enjoy exercising and cooking together and are avid movie-goers. Melissa is available for consultations as needed on a case-by-case basis. Talk with Lucy for more details!
